Print from your Android phone on your PC’s printer

SmartPrint sends a PDF, photo or text file from your phone to a paired PC and prints it there, suggesting duplex, 2-up and color settings.

Available in preview Updated Works on
  • Windows
  • Android
  • Linux

Tap Print on PC on the phone, choose the file, pick one of the PC’s printers and print. The printer only has to be set up on your PC, and SmartPrint suggests settings such as double-sided, two pages per sheet or black-and-white.

At a glance

  • Uses the printers already installed on your PC.
  • Prints PDF, PNG and JPEG images, text and HWP/HWPX files.
  • Recommends duplex, 2-up and color settings for the document.
  • Print is allowed by default for paired devices.

Step by step

  1. Set up the printer on the PC

Install the printer on the PC as usual. On Windows, PDFs print with SumatraPDF when it is installed, otherwise with your default PDF app.

  2. Check the permission

Print is allowed by default. If you changed it, set it back to Allow in the phone’s permissions on the PC.

  3. Print from the phone

Tap Print on PC, choose a PDF, a PNG or JPEG image or a text file, pick the printer and print.

  4. Print on another PC

From a PC, open the other device and use Print on this device (SmartPrint) › Show printers. The recommendation is preselected.

HWP documents

HWP and HWPX files print too, but the PC needs Hancom Office or the free Hancom viewer on Windows, or LibreOffice on Linux. See Print and preview HWP documents.

Command line

pdb printers <device> --for report.pdf lists a device’s printers with the recommendation, and pdb print <device> report.pdf --smart prints with it. Add --in-color for color.

Questions

Does my printer need Wi-Fi?

No. The phone sends the document to your PC, and the PC prints it on whichever printer it already uses.

Which file types can I print?

PDF, PNG and JPEG images, text files and HWP/HWPX documents (the last needs extra software on the PC).

Can I go the other way and scan paper to the PC?

Yes, with the document scanner in the phone app; see Scan documents to your PC.
